Obama is in Austin today to attend the SXSW festival
Earlier this week the Secret Service visited the 360 Tower in Austin, Texas and told the management residents of the building will not be allowed access to their balconies during Obama’s visit to the city on Friday.
Obama is in Austin today to attend the SXSW festival.
“The biggest surprise was we’re not supposed to go out on the balcony,” resident Robyn Dodge told KEYETV, a CBS affiliate.
An email was sent to residents of the posh high-rise telling them the balconies are off limits between 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
KEYETV said if residents violate the order, they will be visited by the Secret Service.
The Secret Service has also instructed businesses along Obama’s tour route to shut down.
“I know some departments in City Hall are doing so, and I hope more downtown employers follow suit. Of course, many local businesses can’t work from home, and I hope you make an effort to support them as well,” Austin Mayor Steve Adler said in a newsletter.
“Safe to say, when his motorcade is on the move, you won’t be, at least downtown,” he added.
The Secret service has also complained about the security risk posed by Austin’s highways and narrow downtown streets.
Resident Agent in Charge, Thomas Edwards, told KXAN on Thursday Austin’s notoriously crowded roads present a challenge to the Secret Service.
“The capacity of the roads to be able to handle the motorcades. And also the impacts of the movements of the President throughout such narrow streets especially as you talk [about] the downtown area or SXSW,” Edwards said.
